Research in Support of the NSWP

Space Weather research grants are sponsored jointly by NSF and DOD and are administered by NSF. They support basic research aimed at promoting the NSWP goal to mitigate the adverse effects of space weather by providing timely, accurate, and reliable space environment observations, specifications, and forecasts.

An effective National Space Weather Program (NSWP) requires a strong commitment to basic research in many areas of space science. Since the start of the National Space Weather Program (NSWP) in 1996, The Upper Atmosphere Research Section of the Division of Atmospheric Sciences of the National Science Foundation (NSF), in coordination with the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) and the Office of Naval Research (ONR), has awarded research grants in support of the NSWP. During 1996-2004, 145 grants for a total of $26,742,674 were awarded. A brief statistics of the program funding is presented in the following document: Funding Research in Support of the National Space Weather Program 1996-2004.

The program is aimed at basic research to advance our understanding of the fundamental physical processes that affect the state of the Sun, solar wind, magnetosphere, ionosphere, and upper atmosphere but with focus on answering research questions that will improve the ability to specify and predict conditions in the space environment.
